OPTIMUM HEALTH DIARY: This section documents my pursuit of peak health and sports performance using established methods, breakthroughs in sports science and alternative/nature options. Does the body deteriorate on default or does our lifestyles and mindset have a lot to do with it? I’ll answer that question in this weekly diary. This is a quest for both health & excellence, I want to push my body to its sporting limits to see what is possible. Why not? Let’s be open minded & approach it as an adventure as well as research. (Literally all of my sporting & fitness personal bests have happened in this period of my life so watch this space!!) MON JULY 27TH: Countless studies have shown the benefits of training outside closer to nature. In summer there’s no excuse not to! Training in park areas means your exercise routine gains all the healthy byproducts of the oxygen emitted by trees rather than the communal sweat of the gym. Nothing beats the great outdoors. In West Ham Park, East London there is a parallel bar area hewn out of trees which attracts the areas fittest. I remember one day I managed a mighty 20 pull ups on the bar, easily more than anyone else but someone comes along within half an hour and makes your effort seem like a distant memory. A little of my routine is at the start of the video but watch the guy at the end effortlessly start doing crazy stuff on the bars – & something like a handstand on the bars with his feet in the air & using that position to start exercising his arms! Someone round the corner is better than you, don’t doubt it, just work out why you want to commit to a training schedule in the first place, choose the best training programme for you and commit!
