GLOBAL WATCH: Speaking at the UN’s Sustainable Energy For All Conference singer Akon revealed that he has founded the Akon Lighting Africa Initiative which will provide solar energy to 600 million people on the African continent who do not have any electricity. His initiative will focus on the rural areas of Africa and has expanded from its initial objective of lighting  1 million homes in Africa to meeting the energy demands in 11 countries. He claimed “Energy is the key to Africa’s development.” Also present on the panel were Adnan Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, Kandeh Yumkella, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and CEO of SE4All, Sheila Oparaocha, Head of Energia and Neven Mimica, EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development.
